Quadrajet Electric Choke

Enthusiasts either love it or hate it. However, the Quadrajet is easily the most tunable spreadbore out there if you pay close attention to what makes this big-throat atomizer tick. The first round of Quadrajet improvements came in with the APT adjustable part throttle feature, which enabled more finite tuning and a smoother transition from idle to power circuit. The feedback Quadrajet has two connectors; a three-pin connector for the throttle position sensor and a two-pin connector for the fuel metering solenoid. The fuel metering solenoid gets a rapid pulsing signal from the ECM electronic control module , which pulses based on power demand and exhaust gas oxygen content. This is known as electronic mixture control. The objective is cleaner emissions and finite power tuning and fuel efficiency.

One end of the spring is anchored to the plastic cap and the other end of the spring is attached to the choke shaft. The cap can thus be rotated to open or close the choke. The spring is a special material called ‘bi-metal’. It is made of two metal alloys that are bonded to each other and have widely different thermal expansion values.

The Quadrajet has been on the Cheyenne since it left the factory. I’m not sure if it’s ever been rebuilt, but the cost of rebuilding it and the fact that parts were missing was a .

I know what the stock diagrams show, just looking to figure out what I having going on with thecar the way I got it. I think I figured out what the previous owner had going on. Well, at least I think so. The manifold vacuum bottom center should have been connected to the hose that went to the T in the hoses going to the vacuum actuators in the snorkels of the original dual snorkel air cleaner.

And I do have vacuum at idle from that port. Instead it is going to my driver’s side front ported vacuum attachment. I get no vacuum at idle and none with throttle from that port. I should be getting some with throttle. I cannot force a wire through it, and cannot blow even compressed through it. I cannot imagine why it would have spent years like this. It is basically capped off. I wanted to use the ported vacuum attachment for my vacuum advance. Maybe a wrong throttle plate gasket?

Types of Carburetors by Dennis Hartman Carburetors were invented in the late-nineteenth century. Since then, carburetor technology has evolved and variations on the original design have been used to produce engines with increased power and efficiency. Today, several distinct types of carburetors exist. Differing in terms of function, complexity and effectiveness, each is appropriate for certain automotive applications. Carburetor Function The function of all carburetors is to blend fuel and air in the proper ratio for combustion in an internal combustion engine.

Carburetors work on the principle of static and dynamic air pressure. Known as Bernoulli’s principle, this means that as air is drawn into an engine more quickly, its dynamic pressure will increase. A carburetor meters this pressure, and allows the corresponding amount of fuel to mix with the air. Sidedraft and downdraft carburetors have differently placed intakes, though they achieve the same purpose.

These differences in design may be due to the positioning of the carburetor near the engine, or to allow for several carburetors to be stacked on top of each other, where they naturally obscure one surface of the next carburetor in line. Placement of the draft is only useful in keeping the intake clear. Variable Most carburetors fall into one of two large headings:

Charcoal canister? Quadrajet vent???

Three different types of numbering systems are found on Carter produced carburetors. Thus in the example C5VF-A, the carburetor would have been the first application for Lincoln in the year It is extremely doubtful that any of the single, double, or early triple digit tags will appear; as they were produced before and were constructed of red cardboard. The metal tag appeared about with tag numbers of about s.

The 4 digit tag appeared in , and was continued on until the end. The letter S and following letters, when present, have caused much speculation mostly incorrect.

I don’t put myself forward as the world’s leading expert on Holleys, but I do have some helpful ideas. In some cases, I may not be able to answer specific questions, but I’ll do my best. I know very little about other brands of carburetors and have no information about them, only general operating principles.

I have NO experience with any type of supercharger or turbocharger, so please don’t ask me anything about your blower or turbo applications. The following few paragraphs is a set of rules I had to create because people were emailing me without enough information or asking really stupid questions that I had no way to answer. The rules didn’t just happen overnight, nor were they something I wanted to do. But I kept getting questions from people who didn’t do any reading or they asked a question I didn’t have any way to answer.

This intake is designed to optimize runner length for gains in low- and mid-rpm torque boosts. The plenum divider is used and cut to a specific height to further improve upon throttle response and mid-rpm power. This small-block, LS1 intake manifold optimizes runner length for solid gains in the midrange of rpm. The production parts are injection-molded, glass-fiber reinforced nylon.

Such aftermarket heads are ideal for a mild version of the buildups described in the story. This aids mixture motion more toward the exhaust valve and spark plug for improved burn and for quicker exit of exhaust gases counterclockwise motion as seen in the photo.

My fearless mechanic son-in-law tells me that the original would have been electric because I don’t have a choke knob inside to pull.

So now I have to put a hole in the dash and hook up a cable and a knob. I could also just send the carb back and buy the Holley one with an electric choke but you guys already told me that the rochester was better. Any advice would be greatly appreciated before I start putting bullet holes in the dam thing. Kath I would set it up with a mechanical choke, with the manifold mounted coil that opens the choke as the engine warms up.

I would expect that’s what came on it originally. They can be a pain if they get misadjusted or rusty. This one is for an Edelbrock performer intake but might work, or someone else might know another.
